The Social Learning program has a new name! The Supportive Learning program is a unique opportunity for your child to learn the academic and social skills that they require to be successful in school and ultimately in their adult lives.
We are lucky to be a part of the Jarvis school family. Students, teachers, administration and other parents have displayed a willingness to accept all the children who attend this school. I think that the school-wide focus on respect, responsibility, homework and kindness to others has enabled your child to practice these skills with less resistance than would occur otherwise. The uniforms mean that visually everyone fits in.
The goal of the Supportive Learning program continues to be that your child is learning academically, socially and emotionally to the best of their abilities. Their Individualized Education Plans are the guide we follow.
I am hoping that the school will be able to work more closely as a team with home and community supports in developing and monitoring the IEP progress. I will invite all parents to a classroom meeting in September. I believe it is important for parents to understand the basic principles of behaviour which we follow in our program. Whether or not an action is repeated is determined by the consequences which come after, at home and at school. Parents can also be a great source of support and knowledge for each other.
Next year we have six students returning for their second or third year in the Jarvis Social Learning program. Two students have moved to the McCloskey senior intermediate Social Learning program. One student has graduated from Grade Seven. We welcome two Grade 4 students and two Grade 5 students to our group.
Mrs. Leone and Ms. Perri have been a very important part of your child's team this year. They provide support in the classroom and on the playground during lunch and recess. They introduce your child to other children in the school and make sure they understand the rules. Mrs. Leone and Mrs. Perri will be with us next year.
We will continue to have our students as part of a regular grade-level classroom and join in with their lessons and activities as much possible given that our goal is to balance academic learning with social opportunities.
The school day will be longer this year. Bus pickup times will be determined by the bus company for a 9:00 am school start. Afternoon pickup at the school will be at 3:00 pm. This will allow students to attend classes for one additional block.
School begins Tuesday September 6th. There will be bus pickup and drop off. Classes run from 9:00 am until noon. Do not worry about having school supplies on this day. Please do not buy the supplies listed for your child's grade. We share cooperatively for most materials. Here is the supply list for Ms. Palmer's classroom 2011-2012. Additional requests for supplies may go home throughout the year.
