Social Learning - Token Economy
CLASSROOM CASH GUIDELINES 2013-14
Many positive behaviour support programs use a token economy to help bring about desired changes in behaviour. Simply, pro-social behaviour is in some way reinforced while unwanted behaviour is ignored or receives a consequence. This program rewards positive and desired behaviour with points (cash) paired with social reinforcement. Students will receive direct instruction to learn new skills and receive prompts and reminders as required. These will be faded as the student internalizes their new skills. Students will be expected to assume increasing responsibility for their behaviour as the year progresses. Expectations and classroom supports will be individualized for each child.
The majority of the day is broken into 20 minute blocks. Students can earn a maximum of 5 points (dollars) for each block for meeting all classroom expected behaviours. Students will earn 5 points for meeting four expected behaviours and 0 points if they display three or less expected behaviours. Students who have earned Full Points ($150.00) for the day usually also receive a certificate they are proud to take home. Students graph their points daily to be aware of how they are doing.
Classroom Cash and Consequences
Expected Classroom Behaviours are taught to students, rehearsed and prompted when required. Students are also taught to monitor their own behaviour and complete their point sheets 4 times during the day – upon arrival, after recess, after lunch and before leaving. They each have a private meeting with the teacher to discuss their points and fill out a yellow Stop and Think sheet if they did not earn full points before receiving their cash. The Stop and Think sheet identifies why the student did not earn points and ways they can make good choices next time. Students who display very inappropriate behaviour will be asked to leave the classroom and will be "Off Points". Students will be helped to use their strategies to calm down if necessary. After they are able to show expected classroom behaviour while seated their desk away from other students for ten minutes, apologize for their behaviour and complete a pink Stop and Think sheet, students are welcome to rejoin the class.
Students who have received an "Off Points" will not be allowed to take part in Shopping or Earned Free Time that day and will use that time to complete missed work, complete spelling or quietly read.
Spending Classroom Cash
Students collect, count and manage their own Classroom Cash. New students will be given adult and peer support to learn this new routine. The money can be spent in a variety of ways. Students may purchase Earned Free Time, a chance to Peel and Win self-selected prizes (such as teacher's chair for the day) or deposit their money into a Classroom Savings account for a bigger purchase. Students do not have money taken away once it has been earned for inappropriate behaviour however, it is expected that they will take care of their money.
Fantastic Friday
On Friday afternoon, students who have completed all homework and assignments and not received more than one "Off Points" during the week have the opportunity to take part in Fantastic Friday. Students are able to select favourite activities and often invite friends from other classrooms to join them!
Homework
Homework is an important part of school. Unless stated otherwise, we expect that any homework assigned is completed, returned and handed in for marking the morning of the next school day. Any necessary corrections will be done as soon as possible. If homework is not completed, the consequence would be: unable to earn some points, unable to cash in points for reinforcers, having to use first available “free time” to complete homework and possibly having to forfeit recess or lunch in order to complete homework.
Usually, students should require no or very little assistance with assigned homework. However, on the odd occasion it is possible that they have difficulty completing it due to a lack of understanding. If parents/guardians write a note or phone us the next morning verifying this, the student would not received unwarranted consequences. We would provide assistance and the homework will still need to be completed that day. As well, occasionally, afternoons and evenings are so hectic that students may not have an opportunity to complete homework. If this is the case and parents/guardians feel that the student had a legitimate reason for not completing homework, write a note or make a phone call. We will try to find time the next day to get the homework completed.
If homework is “completed but left at home”, we will try to phone you to verify the completion of homework. If it was completed, the homework can be brought in the next day. If completion of homework cannot be verified, we will allow it to be brought in the next day as well … however only for the first couple of occurrences. Repeated incidents of “forgetting homework at home” in which parents cannot verify its completion, will be treated as homework not completed.
We use our Palmeropoly game as an additional reward for completing work which is new, difficult or routine, making Good Choices and using behaviour strategies or being successful in a regular classroom.
