The day was gray and rainy but some of the students (and one intrepid parent) braved the weather to explore the beach. Oh well - there's always next year! Each year we have been invited to join with Mr. Hirose's Grade 5 class for a trip to Centennial Beach. We dress warmly (because it is usually gray and drizzly) and marvel in the sea creatures that we find. Mr. Hirose takes us on an incredible nature walk and we all enjoy ourselves immensely. Before we go though, there are a few facts that are important know about the Boundary Bay area where Centennial Beach is located. Watch the video and then answer the questions after the trip.

We are proud of all our students for their many accomplishments. Here are a few more for you to share!
Oh my - has the time gone by that fast? Today was graduation day for Alexia and Jeffrey. We remember the first days that they joined our class - the smiles, the tears, the incredible learning that has occurred. We are so proud of who you have become. You both have accomplished so much this year - band, choir, cross-country, leadership, Grade 7 camp. Thank you so much to your parents for your support while your children have been here at school and the teachers at Jarvis - especially Mrs. Crawford, Mrs. Purdy, and Mrs. Vigario for your patience and excellent teaching. We will miss you next year and really hope you will drop by and visit often! All our planning, preparing and practising came together on Thursday as the Young Entrepreneur show took place in the school gym on Thursday. All the teachers supported our endeavours as they took time out of their busy days to bring their students through the gym and many purchased products as well. The students had a wonderful time and were incredible sales people. They handled themselves with confidence and pride and all experienced success. Many sold out of their products and took additional orders. All made money for themselves and for their charity of choice. Our classroom table made close to $40.00 to support the new school playground. Thanks Nick and Donovan for being such good representatives and to Mrs. Leone and Mrs. Perri for making the products and your help at the show. What a great way to practice our motto - Hard Work Pays Off! Many, many thanks to the parents that helped out at home, sent spending money to school or came to school to support their child and others. As always, we could not do it without you. We also enjoyed the support and help of David Miller, Grade 3/4 Teacher at Jarvis Traditional, Jasmin Sandhu, Account Manager at VanCity North Delta Community Branch 19 and Bill Roche, creator of PowerPlay and the Young Entrepreneur program. Please take the time to watch and enjoy the video. Each year we welcome new students to the Supportive Learning program here at Jarvis. It is always exciting and a little bit scary to move to a new school so we always make sure that students have a chance to come and visit first. We try to show some of the most popular activities we do and share some the Expected Behaviours! We're excited to have you join us in September. (Apologies to Mr. Klassen's class - we missed your pictures!)
We have been so fortunate to be buddied with Mr. Miller's class to take part in a very exciting program. The Young Entrepreneurs program teaches children business fundamentals and paves the way to earning their own money at the Young Entrepreneurs Show. Students have created their own business plans and products, done the marketing and will be salesmen. The North Delta branch of VanCity provided the funds to run the program and have visited our school twice to provide feedback to students. The interviews with their loans officer were amazing (watch for the video clips to be posted). The Fair is being held Thursday, June 20th from 2 - 4pm in the Jarvis Traditional School gym. Please join us and support tomorrow's small and large business people. As is "Traditional" here at Jarvis, our annual Sports Day was cloudy and gray with a hint of rain. But spirits are never dampened and the games go on - rain or shine. A great time was had by all! Congratulations to our three Grade 6 team leaders - Daryen, Brodie and Jordan for doing a great job of making sure your younger students had fun and got to all their stations! A special thank you to Ms. Purdy for making sure we all were included! Each year Scottsdale Mall hosts a Police Exhibition where different forces which provide services for Delta come together to let the public find out about what they do. Renna McCready, the General Manager of the Mall made sure that we were well taken care of during our visit on Friday May 24th. It took our students a while to feel comfortable in asking questions and taking part. Each presenter was patient and made sure that everyone was included. The different exhibits that we saw were

Daryen and Ms. Palmer
Finishing off a great Track & Field season Daryen took part in the Kajaks Provincial Elementary Track & Field championships. They were held on Saturday and Sunday (May 25th and 26th at Minoru Field in Richmond. Daryen showed that he could hold his own with the best runners in the province. On Saturday he placed first in his heat and finished 4th overall in the 2001 Boys 100M dash with a time of 13:86 (out of a field of 60.) On Sunday Daryen also did very well. In the 200M run he again won his heat and placed 5th overall with a time of 29:25 (out of 46 runners). A Special Thanks to Jim and Jennifer Wilson from the Sunshine Hills Elementary Track Team. They helped Daryen to warmup for his 100M final and were enthusiastic supporters! Thank you to Mr. Hirose, Mrs. Roder, Ms. Van Eunen, Ms. Wilson and Mrs. Dettling for your great support and training this year. Our class will be back next year! This year we decided to take a slightly different approach to student led conferences for our students who are not fully integrated. We booked each student-parent combination for a private 30 minute block. Each student did a presentation which talked about their accomplishments this year - academically, socially and behaviourally. The presentation was based on their IEP goals which they self-evaluated. Their presentation folder contained materials which showed their parents work that they were proud of. Students also set goals for next year and gave input about accommodations which would help them succeed in school. Each student was fantastic! They were articulate, remarkably accurate and honest in their assessments of themselves and good self-advocates. IEPs are often dust covered documents which students see as having little relevance to their education or lives. Throughout the year we have tried to take a step towards having our students be true partners in their learning. They have been invited to their IEP meetings. Most have chosen to be present for at least part. In class we often talk about IEP goals, strategies and tools. A familiar question is "Why does he get to ...?" The answer is "It's in his IEP. If you think that it would help you to succeed, let me know and I can add it to your IEP as well." Some of the tools which students have requests are - sit on a fitness ball; use the computer for learning; goodies when I do something well; have another student help me when I find work challenging; take a break or phone my parent when I am upset; use the iPad when I have completed work. I am so pleased with the feeling of accomplishment that our students obviously felt about their year. Well done! I think this is an example of how 21st Century learning ideals can be incorporated into special education without giving up the intensive specialized instruction which should be at its heart.
