We are very fortunate in Delta to have elementary school counsellors interested in coming into classrooms to teach students about the connection between their brains and thoughts, feelings and actions. Our classroom heard about how a tiny area of the brain called the amygdala can take control over the prefrontal cortex (or PFC for short.) The amygdala is very useful in times of danger but not so useful when we are trying to learn! We practiced 3 ways to turn off the amygdala - RELAX, BREATHE, THINK GREEN THOUGHTS! We watched a great video explaining the role of the brain produced by our school counsellor's son.
This is my fourth year as a District Behaviour Support and Intervention teacher with the New Westminster School District. My focus is on students who are having serious challenges with self-regulation across many domains - biological, emotional, cognitive, social and prosocial - at school, at home and in the community. My role is to provide support to teachers and teams to create an environment for success for the student.
