Throughout the week we had many activities to highlight the importance of reading. Mrs. Kapil came and read "Beware of the Bears" to our class and encouraged everyone to write their own sequel to the story.
Last week was Literacy Week. We kicked off the week in an assembly where a number of teachers dressed up as their favourite book character including Mrs. Kapil dressed as the Cat in the Hat. The entire school watched and listened to a book on the big screen and then all four hundred students and teachers pulled out our own books and started reading. The kindergarten kids were a little bit noisy! Throughout the week we had many activities to highlight the importance of reading. Mrs. Kapil came and read "Beware of the Bears" to our class and encouraged everyone to write their own sequel to the story. Throughout the week, teachers roamed through the halls of Jarvis trying to "catch kids reading" so they could have their names entered in a special draw. One day we even wore our pyjamas to class (O.K. I admit I forgot) and used our flashlights to read! The best thing about our school is that students are encouraged to show their learning in various ways. We are so lucky to have many tools to support us. Division 21 took Mrs. Kapil's challenge of writing a sequel to "Beware the Bears" and the results were a movie, written story, two iPad stories and a SCRATCH story. Wow! I'll add the stories as I figure out how to post them on a website.

Reading is very important at Jarvis. Teachers and students celebrated Literacy Week in a number of different ways but Pajama Day was our favourite. Everyone dressed in their most comfy PJ's for the day and brought their precious stuffed animals and even a flashlight for reading in the dark. Throughout the day everyone had a chance to Drop Everything and Read!
